Restructuring NYSC

RESTRUCTURING NYSC

Since the program has been delivered of by the former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Growing in 1973 after the Nigeria Civil War. The program was created as a compulsory one year programme that enwheels all young graduates both within the country between the ages of 18 and 30 for the National Service. It primary purpose was to drive sustainable growth and development in Nigeria while promoting sociocultural integration and national unity by placing youths in different parts of the country.
Again,  it aim was to ensure peace and foster unity and national progress after the war consequently gave rise to the birth of the scheme.  Very indubitable that the establishment of the scheme necessitates in the reconstruction agenda of the government for the fact that it projected the reality of a United strong and self reliant nation. The programme actually solved the disunity problem which was the major issue in Nigeria. However the scheme is not applauded today like before in the sense that it was done in the military era,  the scheme is focused in the primary problem of the country which is unemployment but overtime have become secondary problem.
Today, the various form of social unrest after the civil war has dug deep in the economic backbone which is now affecting the economy i. e Boko Haram in the Northern East, IPOB tension in the South East, Nigeria Delta Militants in the South South and many more.

About 400,000 graduates are produced annually by our tertiary institutions which is not in the case in 1973 when the scheme started, then the country had only six universities and chores out an average of about 7,000 graduates yearly. Today over 1.8 million applicants struggle for admission placement and the digit is most likely to increase with the establishment of more tertiary institution across the country.
It is also gross in sense that the scheme has contributed immensely to promoting national unity, increase mobility of labour, assisted public schools, hospitals and private bodies to have a steady pool of cheap skilled labour. Aside that, they also engage during election but INEC for the young graduates.

The scheme has been a very good transition higher institution to real working life and that has sloped them to over the uncertainties that youths often entertain in terms of  what happen to them outside their home base where they are not in acquaintances with.

Since we are now in the Democratic System, I feel it has become extremely necessary to restructure the program along the lines of empowerment. This can be done if the Federal Government can split into two halves the one year programme,  the first six months can be for paramilitary while the other half can be for skill acquisition in any field such as (tailoring, printing,  painting, GSM phone repair, Auto repair, farming, poultry piggery e. t. c) if this is inculcated, it will empower the youths to go into self empowerment also the government can fund them soft loans with their degree as collaterals. This can be of help instead of training the Corps as if the country is on the verge of war.
Several cases of Corpers to corpse has been heard in the course of participating in the military drilling.  A 21 year old graduate of Ladoke Akintola University,  Ifedolapo Oladepo a First Class transport management who died at the NYSC camp at Kano State. The victim was said to have been unattended to when she was showing symptoms of illness, because the scheme officials had thought she was merely playing on their intelligence to eschew taking part in the mandatory physical exercise know as Drills.  It was learnt that when her situation deteriorated immensely after receiving an injection given to her, she did not show betterment, at the end the intervention of the camp officials became rather too late before the girl kissed the dust. Even though it was later announced that the victim died of a disease called  RENAL SEPSIS commonly caused by urinary tract infection. Same causality was recorded has another First Class graduate at Zamfara State,  Ukeme Monday a graduate of petroleum engineering , Who graduated from University of It Akwa Ibom fell ill and died.  Over the years many Corps members have lost their lives in the course of answering to the clarion call to serve their fatherland under any circumstances.

It will be of great advantage if the military drilling can be called off or reduced because the physical stress the members are subjected to is certainly too energy strapping (consuming) and strenuous. They really need to experience the Corps members go through in the course of embarking on military drill. These members are simple fresh brains who are just trying to learn something new they are not acquainted with.

What will be the benefit of risking ones life on a strange land where there is not enough food?  How can they (youth)  do better when they are aware of what will encroach them after the service year)? I think the Federal Government should deal with these and many more questions also to use the scheme to address if really the government has interest in the youths.

The 700,000 that is budgeted for the Corps members per year to make them financially independent by settling them to start any business of their choice also their allowances should be increased and paid promptly. What they receive presently can not be said to be realistic in view of the rate of the high price of goods and commodities in the country.
Afterwards, if this is done,  70% of God yearly graduates will become financially stable via that and the primary problem which is unemployment will drastically reduce to it minimum.

The Federal Government should consider that the youth who now participate are the future leaders of the country and nothing can be too much to invest in the future of any nation
